Whether you have aligners or braces, it’s really important to keep your teeth and appliances clean throughout the day. Since you can’t always be at home after meals and snacks, it’s a good idea to keep cleaning aids in your locker, backpack, purse or desk so you always have it handy. Here are a few must-haves for cleaning on the go. If you need more suggestions for proper hygiene away from home, just ask our Experts in the Art of Orthodontics!
You should always have clean teeth before putting aligners back in as well as any time you eat with braces. Keep a travel sized toothbrush handy along with an interproximal brush, which can reach food between teeth, around brackets, and between the archwire and teeth.
Choose an ADA-approved toothpaste with fluoride to keep your teeth strong during treatment. It’s a good idea to postpone whitening toothpaste until your braces or attachments are removed so the whitening ingredients can be evenly applied.
Floss is essential for cleaning between teeth, between the archwire and the teeth (if you aren’t using an interproximal brush), and under the gumline. You’ll also need a stash of floss threaders if you have braces or bridges. We have also found that Platypus Flossers are very easy to use and fit underneath the wire. They can be purchased online or at our office.
You may think water will always be nearby to rinse your aligners or swish debris out of your brackets, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Keep a water bottle in your office desk or backpack in case you find yourself in a situation where you can’t get to a sink.
When you’re away from home, you’ll want to do a post-brush check to make sure you don’t have embarrassing food stuck in your brackets or between wires. Stick a mirror in your locker, computer bag or purse. You can also use your phone’s selfie option if a mirror isn’t available.
