Getting to Know Dr. Alex Oldroyd

Ask anyone in our office and they’ll agree: Dr. Alex loves to have fun. It’s just not hard to do when work doesn’t feel like – well – work.

“Every day, I get to help people feel better about themselves,” he says. “I watch patients go from never wanting to show their teeth to smiling from ear to ear. That’s a lot of fun.”

The boost in confidence that a new smile brings is what led Dr. Alex to the field of orthodontics. After practicing general dentistry for two years, he realized that what he loved most was seeing how happy his patients were after undergoing cosmetic procedures. He decided that becoming an orthodontist would allow him to perform more complex esthetic work that could bring smiles to even the toughest cases. After completing his orthodontic residency six years ago, he came to work at Bankhead and has enjoyed every moment since.

“I’ve seen patients come in who feel hopeless,” he says. “If you looked at their pictures on social media, you’d notice they hide their teeth because they’re embarrassed. They come in and say ‘I know there’s probably nothing you can do to help, but…’ and I’m able to answer them with ‘Yes, I can.’ Even after just beginning treatment, they walk out of here with a smile because their self-esteem is already changing. They have hope, and that makes me happy…because to me it’s about so much more than what’s inside a patient’s mouth. Behind every set of teeth is a person.”

Dr. Alex is proud to treat patients ranging from adults to children, and as a father of three, he knows that having fun goes a long way when it comes to calming kids’ nerves. He makes his young patients laugh by telling jokes, and he enjoys engaging them in conversation to help them know their concerns are always valid.

“I enjoy seeing my patients every few weeks and building a relationship with each of them,” he says. “I always say I have three kids at home, but I have 500 in the office.”

Being a part of the Bankhead team means Dr. Alex has access to the newest, most advanced technology to develop plans for treating tough cases. Using 3D X-rays allows him to see greater detail of the teeth and the surrounding structures for better diagnoses. And like his colleagues, he is Invisalign® certified and passionately committed to continuing education in the industry.

“There are always advancements in orthodontics, and as a practice we continue to stay on top of the latest information,” he says. “Everyone is fine tuning how to make Invisalign better, more accurate, more efficient. We will continue to do our research to offer our patients the very best treatment.”

Dr. Alex attributes the success of his practice and its patients not only to the most advanced technology, but also to the support of the team’s amazing clinical staff. They work hard to become expanded function certified. Having a caring, experienced staff means extra eyes and ears for the orthodontists, and an extra level of comfort for patients.

When he’s away from the office, Dr. Alex likes to spend time with his wife and three daughters. He also enjoys running and riding his bike, and is a director for a local youth choir. He speaks German, and he and his wife are also learning Spanish, as they are always trying to learn something new.
