Lingual (invisible) Braces

Unlike traditional braces, lingual braces are placed behind your teeth, making them virtually invisible when you smile. Lingual treatment is our most advanced and esthetic option for patients who want to smile without showing their appliances.

WHO CAN HAVE LINGUAL BRACES?

Both adults and teens may be candidates for orthodontic treatment with lingual braces!  We have treated over 900 patients with lingual braces, ranging from early teenagers to older adults.  We’ll be sure to recommend the best treatment type for you during your complimentary consultation.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF LINGUAL BRACES?

There are many advantages of lingual braces, but the biggest benefit is cosmetics!  Lingual braces are our most cosmetic and advanced treatment option.  Teens and adults desiring braces that are hidden from view enjoy the esthetics offered by lingual braces.  Lingual braces are also appealing to patients interested in removable aligners like Invisalign who feel they will have issues remembering to wear the trays.  Clear aligners are a great option for patients committed to wearing them!  But aligners only work when they’re being worn – they don’t work when they’re in your pocket or on the nightstand. Lingual braces are glued to your teeth so you can’t forget to wear them – they’re always working.

DO ALL ORTHODONTISTS OFFER LINGUAL BRACES?

While all orthodontists can offer lingual braces, less than 2% of orthodontists regularly treat with lingual appliances. Most practices don’t use lingual braces because they are much more complex than traditional braces, require significant additional training, and involve more doctor time and chair-time to do the adjustments.  Without proper training and experience, it is difficult to treat patients and get acceptable results with braces located on the inside of the teeth.

Bankhead Orthodontics has made a commitment to treating with lingual braces, having completed over 900 cases!  Because of our commitment to lingual braces, we have been awarded ‘The SureSmile Lingual Practice-of-the-Year’ for 2013, 2014 and 2016.  In addition, our doctors have lectured internationally on lingual braces and are clinical instructors for SureSmile training courses that teach lingual orthodontics.

DO LINGUAL BRACES HURT?

This is where traditional braces and lingual braces are similar! Patients can expect to have tender teeth (and a tender tongue) for about 1-2 weeks after lingual braces are placed. The level of discomfort varies quite a bit from patient to patient.  In general, teeth may feel sore, slightly loose, and tender when biting.  Most over-the-counter pain medications such as Tylenol or Advil help with any soreness and discomfort that may be experienced.  After the first few weeks, lingual braces become comfortable to wear and most patients forget that they are even on their teeth.
